Fee Philosophy
Hall Global thinks being upfront about legal fees serves everyone’s interests.
We begin with the premise that the ‘worker is worth his wages.’ You can find cheaper law firms than us. You can also find more expensive firms. The question is whether your life, your business opportunity, your travel, your company is worth the best chance at approval or the best defense from the government. You wouldn’t put your life in the hands of a surgeon who competed on price rather than skill. We cannot guarantee approval or total victory just as the world’s best surgeon cannot guarantee a successful surgery. We can guarantee that by putting our best skill and effort at your service, you will get the best results the law and facts allow. In short, it will be done right and, if it is worth doing, it is worth doing right.
Hall Global charges on an hourly basis for the majority of its matters. It does so for a number of reasons. Flat fees put the lawyer at war with the client. By default, flat fees are set higher than the matter would otherwise cost and create incentives to cut corners because less time means more profit. The kind of work we do is rarely cookie cutter making it harder to set a fair price. And, really, do you want cookie cutter service? In the long run, we can’t afford to provide personalized service for cookie cutter prices. Nor can you afford cookie cutter service for cookie cutter price.
Hourly rates are transparent. If you think a charge is inappropriate, you call us and we talk. With a flat fee, the client never knows.
We will consider flat fees and other billing options on special occasions for long-term clients. That way we both can make an informed decision based on relevant experience.

We take seriously our obligation to control costs as we can while providing excellent legal work. First, we staff leanly. Most matters will be staffed with a senior professional and a junior professional/senior paralegal. This cuts down on unnecessary duplication. While we charge for productive meetings focused on your matter, there will be no “15-minute work meetings” where six billers charge for the same time. We also provide regular, detailed invoices showing our work. There will be no situations in which you don’t hear from us for weeks and get a large invoice. Second, we will set a budget upfront. The budget is not guaranteed or a straight jacket but it creates a baseline for discussion. Finally, we review each invoice for charges that we are not comfortable making and are ready to make appropriate adjustments so long as you are willing to listen with an open mind to our explanations when requested.

Most matters involve an evergreen retainer. We find that an appropriate retainer minimizes business issues and allows total focus on the legal work. Some clients may opt out of retainers. In that case, we make separate arrangements to guarantee timely payment. Again, this allows for total focus on the legal work.

Hall Global sets its hourly rates based on the Washington DC legal market. It starts with the market rate as a base and adjusts for the experience and reputation of the individual legal professional. Usually that yields the rate. If there are unusual factors such as high complexity or the presence of a conflict of interest that precludes us from seeking other work, we will discuss adjustments.
Non-legal professionals’ rates are set similarly.
